The Incredible Shrinking Man

Not to be confused with lesser 50s Sci-Fi movies, this is an all-time classic. Ask profound existential questions about identity, being and ultimately our relationship with the universe. Cracking stuff.

The Courage to Be - Paul Tillich

Not everyone's favourite Theologian, but still a brilliant modern dissection of the problems of existence, the anxieties we all face eventually... easier to read than Kierkegaard!

Timothy Keller

MP3 Sermon from New York's finest - Blueprint for Revival - Social Concern

Sartre and Peanuts - this is a brilliant online article which unwraps the existentialism of Schulz's perrennial favourite little fella!

Why do I feel Lonely?

‘About a boy’ pg 74-75
Loneliness – feeling of being alone – one of the last taboos in society, not something we easily admit to, and yet it need not be that dramatic. Loneliness is something we all feel at times in our lives for all sorts of ‘normal reasons’ and yet it is no less devastating.

1. Boris Pasternak – Dr Zhivago Pg255 – Loneliness of childbirth / pain
2. Death – a journey we do alone
3. Bereavement – no one else knows ‘exactly’ how we feel
4. Children starting school / leaving home / empty nest
5. Divorce / Separation
6. Depression / Illness
7. Not ‘fitting in’

Jesus and the Lonely

1. Jesus knew what it was to be lonely and isolated
a. John 13 v36-38
b. Mark 15 v34
c. Mark 14 v32-42

2. Jesus loves and encourages the lonely and outcast
a. Mark 14 v3-9 – sinful woman
i. Socially inappropriate
ii. ‘A non-person’
iii. Probably no family
iv. No financial security
v. Is drawn to Jesus
vi. He accepts her as she is, loves her and ‘bigs her up’

3. Jesus is interested in the most personal details
a. Mark 5 v25-34
i. Jesus let her tell him things he should have shunned
ii. He let her touch him
iii. He restores her in every sense

4. Jesus is interested in the ‘lowly and lonely’
a. Luke 14 v12-14

5. Jesus is interested in the root of the problem – a challenger and encourager, not a patronising disabler

6. Jesus sees people’s true worth and what they CAN be

How can the church be Jesus to the lonely and lost in our generation?

The church must be made up of people who realise that they were once the lonely and lost themselves.

Lisa Kerry - March 2007
